Nigeria, known for its rich cultural diversity, is home to over 200 million people representing more than 250 ethnic groups, each with a unique history and lineage. From the ancient Benin Kingdom to the revered Sokoto Caliphate, Nigeria’s historical landscape is woven with stories of resilience, migration, and unity in diversity. Yet, as modernity and urbanization sweep across the nation, many ancestral stories are at risk of fading into obscurity. To prevent this, the mission of our platform is clear: to become Nigeria’s largest repository of genealogical records, preserving the legacies of every Nigerian family for future generations.

On this page, we present the results of our research on Nigerian family branches and other related trees from Efik, Ibibio, Annang, Ejagham and Eket as well as Ibeno and Ijaw with some sidelines.

The data of Living persons, who were born less than 100 years ago, as well as all picture files, notes and sources, are only displayed to registered and authorized users.

https://nigeriagenealogy.ng/ was launched in 2014 by genealogy enthusiasts. A sizeable number of members share entries for free in their Family Trees, Archival Records, Indexes, Family Pictures and Postcards. A powerful search engine and a wiki are available to help genealogists in their research. Later, we will offer nigerianancestry.com Premium Membership which will offers an Ad-Free browsing and many extended search features.

Why Genealogy Matters in Nigeria

Genealogy, the study of family history and ancestry, provides a profound sense of identity and connection to one’s roots. In Nigeria, where family lineage and heritage have always been paramount, tracing ancestry connects individuals to their communities, cultures, and shared values. This connection fosters a sense of pride in one's heritage and provides a deeper understanding of Nigeria's collective history. Genealogy also plays a critical role in resolving personal questions about ancestry, such as understanding cultural practices, inheritance traditions, and even answering questions about ancestral migrations and kinship.

A Repository for 200 Million Stories

Our platform is embarking on an ambitious journey to document and profile the genealogies of Nigeria’s diverse population. Through comprehensive family trees, oral histories, and archival records, we aim to profile 200 million Nigerians, establishing a centralized hub for Nigerian family history. This repository will serve as a valuable resource for individuals seeking to trace their lineage, reconnect with distant relatives, and uncover stories from past generations. With a user-friendly interface, individuals can input their family histories, search for ancestral records, and contribute to a growing database that celebrates Nigerian heritage.

Tracing Ancestry Across Nigeria’s Cultural Landscape

Nigeria’s genealogical records are as diverse as its people. Each region holds its unique historical narrative:

By capturing and preserving these records, we aim to provide a comprehensive resource that highlights Nigeria’s dynamic history and the interconnectedness of its people.

Becoming a Custodian of Family History

The heart of this project is the commitment to preserve Nigeria’s ancestral legacy for future generations. This effort extends beyond recording names and dates—it’s about safeguarding the rich tapestry of Nigeria’s cultures, achievements, struggles, and triumphs. Families can share oral histories, photographs, documents, and other artifacts that bring their ancestry to life. Through collaborative efforts with communities, historians, and local institutions, we hope to deepen the understanding of Nigerian family histories, making them accessible to everyone.

Building a Legacy for Future Generations

By creating Nigeria’s largest genealogical repository, we ensure that the stories of our ancestors are not lost to time. In preserving these records, we empower future generations to learn about their heritage, celebrate their ancestors’ contributions, and foster unity by understanding the shared history of Nigeria’s diverse population. This database will be a bridge to the past and a legacy for future generations, establishing an enduring resource for anyone interested in exploring Nigerian heritage.

View the hint, and save it to your tree -The hint could reveal a new name to search or even a new ancestor to add to your tree.

Watch your family story emerge -The more you add, the more hints you get. And gradually your family story becomes clearer.
